Powers of the ancient crystals

Below is a chart for creating magic crystals and their effects that I use in my homebrew game.

Start by rolling a d6.  This determines the colour of the crystal that you are using.

1. Red

2. Blue

3. Yellow

4. Pink

5. Black

6. White

Once the colour has been determined, simply roll the 3d6 and read the results.

For example, a player rolls 4,3,4,3. This would read (Pink) Memory, Mother's, Honey. The player than adds a few connecting words such as of, as, the etc. and there you have your new spell. Memory of Mother's Honey!

But what does this new spell do? Well in my game I rule that there are two types of crystals, but you can take this framework and run with it. For me it's either a Major or a Minor crystal.

A major crystal  does either a d12 damage or a d10 + 1 ability  or d8 + 2 abilities.

A minor is much the same but instead does d8 damage or d6 + 1 ability or d4 + 2 abilities.

So sticking with our new spell, Memory of Mother's Honey, and assuming its a major crystal, the crystal's power could be used to shoot out a sticky liquid at such velocity that it deals a d12 damage, which is fine and all but it could more interesting than that. Instead it could do a d10 damage but also covers the target in a sticky substance that slows their movement by half. Better still it could do a d8 worth of damage, slow the target to half speed and on a 2in6 attracts insects or rodents to do an additional 1d4 damage for d3 rounds.

The point is to work with your players to figure out what crazy ideas they can come up with. Hopefully this just gives you the framework to get the ball rolling.

As for the White crystals roll as normal, but instead of taking the result, reroll on the colour outcome. For example, the player rolled 3,1,4 = Yellow, Red, Pink. Then they re roll the result in each column. 5,2,5 from the previously rolled 3,1,4 (Yellow, Red, Pink). Use the same columns as you would have in white. This outcome would give us the spell 'System of Radiant daydream'. What that does I have no idea, but I am sure you can come up with something.
